Romantic Sex - Gays, Comedy!
The presence of LGBTQ+ rom-coms "situates LGBTQ+ people firmly within our cultural landscape," adds Julia Himberg, PhD, associate professor and director of film and media studies at Arizona State University. She notes that though rom-coms are often undervalued as "fluff," they're actually "a vital genre for us to be seen and validated in those relationships, whatever they may look like." In fact, Himberg says, "These films contribute to social change, precisely because of their comedy."

What if you could bypass all the initial first date nonsense and skip to being fully honest with someone from the second you meet? In this experimental comedy, co-written and starring Alia Shawkat, two women do just that. They make a pact to spend 24 uninterrupted hours together, being intimate in every way possible. This makes for a steamy, soul-bearing film tackling what it means to get close to someone.
This German tragicomedy film introduces you to Lukas, a transgender man who is in the midst of transitioning. While getting his foothold in the Cologne LGBTQ+ community, he meets Fabio, the local bad boy, and the two start a romance.
From the ferocious comic mind of Billy Eichner (Billy on the Street, 2019's The Lion King, Difficult People, Impeachment: American Crime Story) and the hitmaking brilliance of filmmakers Nicholas Stoller (the Neighbors films, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Judd Apatow (The King of Staten Island, Trainwreck, The Big Sick), comes Bros, a smart, swoony and heartfelt comedy about finding sex, love and romance amidst the madness. Bros is directed by acclaimed comedy filmmaker Nicholas Stoller, director of the Hollywood smash movies Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek, The Five-Year Engagement, Neighbors, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, and Storks previously. previously. The screenplay is co-written by Nicholas Stoller and Billy Eichner. It's produced by Judd Apatow, Stoller and Joshua Church. Universal will debut Stoller's Bros in theaters exclusively starting September 30th, 2022 this fall. Who wants to watch?
This fumbling finale aside, Bros is a spectacular comedy, crackling with New York wit, queer snark, and a slathering of heart. Eichner and Macfarlane share a steamy chemistry that achieves the too-rare goal of making a rom-com genuinely sexy. Stoller's skill with multi-faceted funny stories enables Bros to balance meta elements with a winding plot, a collection of attention-snatching characters, LQBTQ+ history, and a pumping emotional core. It's not always a smooth ride, but it's always an entertaining one.
Billy Eichner wrote and starred in this gay rom-com with an all LGBTQ+ principal cast, including Bowen Yang, Ts Madison, Guillermo Diaz, and Luke Macfarlane as Eichner's love interest. The movie, which is being called the first gay romantic comedy by a major studio, just wrapped filming and is scheduled to hit theaters August 22, 2022.
Alexandra Grey and Trace Lysette are starring in this indie romantic thriller set in San Francisco's famed Tenderloin, the world's first legally recognized transgender district. With a cast that includes RuPaul's Drag Race winner Kylie Sonique Love and Krystal Thomas, the movie is hoping to get strong awards attention for it's acting, directing and writing.
Keiynan Lionsdale and Dylan Sprouse will star in this romantic comedy from Lionsgate and BuzzFeed. It follows "a young man in a tricky situation, who follows the advice of his unconventional best friend and uses social media to create a fake boyfriend to keep his awful ex-lover out of his life" but then meets the person he thinks might be the real love of his life. The movie is supposed to be out in time for Pride 2022.
Mae Martin created, wrote and starred in Feel Good as a fictionalised version of themselves, a comedian and addict whose behaviours and intense romanticism negatively dominate their life. Co-starring Charlotte Ritchie as their partner George, as well as Lisa Kudrow and Adrian Lukis as their parents, the dark comedy chronicles Mae as they juggle relationships with their friends and family, fellow addicts and colleagues at their local stand-up comedy club. Martin received a nomination for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Female Comedy Performance (before coming out as non-binary) for their work on the series.
Uncoupled is a new bittersweet romantic comedy series coming Netflix and starring Neil Patrick Harris (NPH). This is just one project amongst others recently released that are romantic comedies focusing on telling a love story from a different perspective, and by doing so break away from conventional narratives.
This series joins other projects such as Fire Island and Bros, which are also romantic comedies written from the perspective of gay men. Bros is making waves for having an entirely LGBT+ main cast and for telling a queer love story. On the other hand, Fire Island, which takes inspiration from Pride and Prejudice, is praised for providing a fresh approach to the rom-com genre. Apart from these recent projects, romantic comedies have usually been reserved for stories told between heterosexual couples, meaning that Uncoupled will continue to help evolve the genre.
The show is also one of the latest projects from producer Darren Star, who worked on other series such as Sex and the City and Emily in Paris. From this, it is hard not to draw parallels between this series and Sex and the City, as Carrie Bradshaw shares certain similarities with Michael as a successful middle-aged career woman from Manhattan looking for love. Uncoupled will soon be premiering on Netflix, so audiences will get the chance to see NPH in action as the lead in this series that will hopefully spark a continuation in the trend of creating genre-breaking romantic comedies.
But if you like your frothy gay sex comedy served with a side of real estate porn, you could do worse than Uncoupled. And forgive yourself if, in any given scene, you find your attention drifting away from Michael's sexy hijinks and onto his apartment's layout.

The rom-com genre is often overly saturated with a ton of films that involve a predictable romance between a heterosexual couple who either fall in love at first sight or move from enemies to lovers. While these tropes are definitely tried and true, there's just something a little more exciting about them when they get put through a queer lens. Although results may vary, it's still heartening to watch a queer romance unfold on the silver screen, especially when most LGBTQ+ movies still tend to be riddled with tragedy. \nQueer people are still largely underrepresented in mainstream media, but we've seen some incredible strides in the right direction in recent years. This has brought us queer characters that people can love and relate to and new stories that validate the LGBTQ+ experience. \nAlthough there's still work to be done, every onscreen queer triumph and instance of shattered heteronormative ideals are still a cause for celebration. Queer stories need to be told as often and accurately as possible to help normalize the endless forms that love can come in. As LGBTQ+ media continues to grow, we can only hope that new films will include more queer people of color and more stories that highlight underrepresented gender identities and sexual orientations. \nAs queer media continues to expand, so too does the LGBTQ+ rom-com library. From heartfelt gay and lesbian films about love and acceptance to passionate romances with trans leads, this colorful collection of 20 LGBTQ+ rom-coms will make you giggle, swoon, and wipe away tears all in one sitting.\n","id":48844811,"type":"gallery","photo_source":"Image Source: Everett Collection","permalink":"https:\/\/www.popsugar.com\/entertainment\/lgbtq-romantic-comedies-48844811","canonical":"https:\/\/www.popsugar.com\/entertainment\/lgbtq-romantic-comedies-48844811","share_text":"20 LGBTQ+ Rom-Coms to Watch Beyond Pride Month","use_tall_image":false,"omit_from_countdown":false,"caption_num":false,"slide_tags":"Romantic ComediesIdentityMoviesLGBTQ+Pride Month","is_cover":true},"image":"https:\/\/media1.popsugar-assets.com\/files\/thumbor\/DS7sglZn1bLYMC34jMo7u13FCmQ\/fit-in\/1024x1024\/filters:format_auto-!!-:strip_icc-!!-\/2022\/06\/22\/762\/n\/47009980\/25eb317362b34ee01c96e2.59735353_MCDHAOF_ZX00\/i\/Half-It.jpg","share_image":"https:\/\/media1.popsugar-assets.com\/files\/thumbor\/NIiIUNHWFaK8DlBLntWiHW079aA\/fit-in\/2048xorig\/filters:format_auto-!!-:strip_icc-!!-\/2022\/06\/22\/762\/n\/47009980\/25eb317362b34ee01c96e2.59735353_MCDHAOF_ZX00\/i\/Half-It.jpg","title":"\"The Half of It\"","intro_text":false,"body":"Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis) is an extremely smart, albeit a bit introverted, high school girl who happens to be the only Asian teenager in town.
